Court suspends Mawanella PS meeting

Mawanella Magistrate Court issued a restraining order against the monthly meeting of the Mawanella Pradeshiya Sabha which was planned to be held yesterday (10) morning, defying the quarantine laws.

Mawanella police area is under quarantine curfew and declared an isolated area since the second wave of the Covid-19 outbreak. Public movement is highly restricted in the area except for essential services. Under these circumstances, as the responsible authority to establish quarantine law, to take necessary actions and precautions to keep the spreading of the virus in the area at bay, this behaviour of the Chairman of the Mawanella Pradeshiya Sabha and Mayors of the Municipal is highly unacceptable.

The police have reported the case to the Mawanella Magistrate Court after investigating and confirming the information they had received on this, under the provisions of the Section 106 of the Criminal Procedure Court Act no. 15 of 1979 and the provisions of quarantine and prevention of disease ordinance and subsequent gazette notification published on the 15th of October 2020. Accordingly, Magistrate Upul Rajakaruna issued an interim order, suspending the sessions of the Mawanella PS for a period of 7 days starting today.

The Police Media Spokesman Ajith Rohana speaking to the media said;

“Mawanella police had received information that the monthly meeting of the Mawanella Pradeshiya Sabha was to be held today in defiance of quarantine laws. After examining the information, the police confirmed that the information was true. Accordingly, the police reported the matter to the Mawanella Magistrate’s Court. A restraining order has been issued prohibiting the holding of the monthly meeting.”

He further said that if the Mawanella PS violates the restraining order issued, violators will be punished under the charges of contempt of court.
