Arresting Myanmar Election Commission officials : A threat to democracy – SL Election Commission

The Election Commission Council of Sri Lanka expresses their concern over the abolition of democratic governance in Myanmar, following the election.
In a press release issued today, the SL Election Commission stated that it is a tragedy that the Myanmar Election Commission officials including the President of the Council, U Hla Thein, were arrested for performing their lawful duty to handle the election procedures.
“It is unfortunate that the Election Commission officials of Myanmar have to go to jail for performing their duties as they are legally entrusted with the task,” the commission further stated.
The SL Election Commission further stated that it is prejudicial to the democracy to arrest the Myanmar Election Commission officials, and requested the relevant authorities to grant their freedom. The commission further called on the forces that value democracy to press the issue with maximum effort to see the Myanmar Election Council officials free.
