Conducting PCR tests at private laboratories has created confusion: SLAGMLT

The Sri Lanka Association of Government Medical Laboratory Technologists (SLAGMLT) requested the Government including the President to conduct a proper investigation to prevent confusion created by directing PCR tests to be conducted at private laboratories outside the Ministry of Health.

SLAGMLT President Ravi Kumudesh in a letter to the President said that the control of the Covid-19 epidemic has become unnecessarily confusing due to the release of false PCR test reports. He said the government has been told about this on several occasions but no action has been taken.

He said it was proved that the PCR test of the sea guard from Jinthupitiya, in Colombo 13 who was falsely declared as COVID-19 positive, has been conducted by a laboratory outside the ministry.

The Government Information Department on July 2 announced that a sea guard arrived from India and referred for self quarantine at Jinthupitiya has tested positive for the virus. However, it was later found that the result was false.

Ravi Kumudesh in his letter said the results of five PCR tests conducted at a laboratory belonging to the Ministry of Health later confirmed that the patient was not infected with COVID-19.

He further requested the government to look into such erroneous tests and laboratories outside the Ministry of Health.
