A complaint has been lodged against Inspector of Police (IP) Neomal Rangajeewa for obstructing the duties of a photojournalist near the Hulftsdorp Court Premises in Colombo today, police sources said.
The journalist complained that the IP had grabbed him by the collar when he was taking photographs of the officer in connection with a case being heard in court.
The complaint further said the IP had tried to assault the journalist while another group had obstructed his duties. The journalist said Mr. Rangajeewa dragged him from his shirt and took him to a police post and that the memory cards of his camera were also seized by the police.
"When Mr. Rangajeewa arrived, I took some photographs. Then, all of a sudden, he dragged me away saying ‘Who are you to take photos’. I said I’m a journalist. I showed him my media identity card. The police kept the two memory cards and then released me. I was not given the two memory cards and the police said they will keep them as evidence,” the journalist said.
