Both state and private media institutions have become mouthpieces of the government, former MP of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and Gampaha District National People's Power (NPP) candidate Vijitha Herath said.
In an interview with the Medialk.Com, Mr. Herath said the government is misusing the media with its power to broadcast false opinion inciting racism.
"This is unfair. All media institutions are being used for the promotion of the government and to hide its incompetency and weaknesses," he said.
He said they have complained to the National Election Commission over the issue. "A gazette has been issued with media guidelines to be followed at the general election but the government uses its power to incite racism in their favour and to publicise false opinions. This is wrong," he said.
Meanwhile, he said they would continue to fight for the freedom of expression. "It is us who fight for the freedom and democracy in the country. Today, laws are being implemented differently to each one based on their status. We fight against this injustice.
People have a right to express their opinions freely and to object to any issue. However, we saw how police attacked protesters who were protesting against the US," he said,
