Karuna Amman to record statement at CID

Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias "Karuna Amman" has been summoned to the CID to record a statement over his claims of killing 2000 to 3000 Army personnel in one night during his membership of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), Police Spokesperson SSP Jaliya Senaratna said, speaking to Medialk.com.

According to Senaratne, the Acting Inspector General of Police recently ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to launch an immediate probe into the controversial statement made by Karuna Amman recently. Accordingly, the former minister has now been summoned to the CID.

Karuna Amman, a former member of the terrorist outfit LTTE recently stated that he was extended an invitation to join the parliament from the National List. Quoting a conversation with Prime Minister Amman said; "Prime Minister Mahinda invited me this time as well. He said Amman, come from the National List this time as well, why trouble yourself? I, however, thanked him for giving me such an opportunity, twice. I told him that I would win the mandate of the people and join them," he said.

Karuna Amman further added "The Karthivu local government body Chairman has claimed that I am more dangerous than the coronavirus. This is true. Covid-19 only claimed 9 Sri Lankans. We have killed some 2000 to 3000 army soldiers in one night, at Elephant Pass. What he claimed is true. How many more were killed in Kilinochchi?" Amman questioned.

During the presidential election, the one- time Minister also commented that the Muslim population in Sri Lanka should be controlled and suppressed, adding that the most suitable person for this task would be Gotabaya Rajapaksa. A complaint in this regard was lodged by Election Commission member Prof. Ratnajeevan Hoole at the time, although no investigation was launched nor an attempt to arrest Karuna Amman was made. A voice recording of Karuna Amman's statement was also submitted to the Police. At the time, Police said that a probe would be carried out by the CID.
