After months of COVID-19 positive cases reported from among the Navy personnel within the Welisara and Rangala camps, the Health Ministry yesterday declared the two Navy Camps free of COVID-19.
Accordingly, Deputy Health Director General Dr. Paba Palihawadana yesterday said there are no more COVID-19 cases being reported from Navy personnel from these two camps.
On April 22, the first COVID-19 positive sailor was reported from the Welisara Navy Camp.
The authorities said the Navy personnel had contracted the virus when they were attempting to manage a group of drug addicts in order to send them to a quarantine facility.
Since late April, the number of COVID-19 cases from within the Navy increased gradually and all Navy personnel were instructed to report back to duty ending their leave.
They were put in quarantine and subjected to PCR tests. As of today, close to a 1,000 Navy personnel had tested positive for the virus while 740 were discharged from hospital after being recovered.
