Twin babies born during coronavirus lockdown in Raipur-India, have been named as Corona and Covid, the Hindustan Times reported.

They were born during the ongoing coronavirus-enforced nationwide lockdown which has disrupted normal life.

The world has fallen to its knees in the wake of the Corona epidemic, but that has not deterred a couple in Chhattisgarh to name their newborn twins as ‘Corona’ and ‘Covid’.

The two words may evoke fear and devastation in minds of others , but the parents say that they symbolise triumph over hardships during the lockdown by these names.

They said the two names would remind them of all the hardships they had to overcome until the delivery amidst the lockdown.

However, the couple said they would later change their decision and change the names.

"I was blessed with twins - a baby boy and a baby girl, in the early morning of March 27th. We have named the boy as Covid and the girl as Corona for now,” Preeti Verma, the 27-old mother of the newborns said.

Dellivery came after a lot of hardships. So me and my husband wanted to make the day memorable“Indeed the virus is dangerous and life-threatening but its outbreak made people focus on sanitation, hygiene and inculcate other good habits. Thus, we thought about these names,” She said, citing reasons for their unusual decision.

"We were stopped by police in various places because of the lockdown, as no vehicles were allowed on the roads. But they saw my condition and let us go. I wondered what will happen in the hospital.  Fortunately, the doctors and other staff were very supportive, ”Verma added.

Verma, who already has a two-year-old daughter, said her relatives wanted to visit the hospital to see their newborns but were unable to make it as bus and train services were stopped.

The twins were born in Dr BR Ambedkar Memorial Hospital.

Hospital Public Relations Officer Shubra Singh said the mother and newborns were healthy and discharged.

As soon as Verma reached the hospital with her husband, arrangements were made to perform a caesarean section on her as it was a complicated case, Singh said.

“Within 45 minutes of their arrival, the delivery was done successfully,” he mentioned.

The twins had become a centre of attraction in the hospital after the couple named them as Covid and Corona, Singh said.
