Italy has reported 919 new deaths in the last 24 hours.
This is the highest number of deaths in any country within 24 hours of space since the outbreak began in december 2019.
The total number of COVID-19 deaths in Italy has now risen up to 9,134.
Meanwhile, the number of infected has increased to 86,498, making Italy the second country after the United States to surpass china.
Further dashing hopes that Europe is containing the pandemic, Spain recorded 769 new deaths in a daily, bringing the total number to 4,858.
Worldwide, more than 25,000 people have died from coronavirus, an infection which has affected more than half a million people.
