Death toll in Italy rockets by 793 in 24 hours

The number of deaths due to coronavirus in Italy has risen by 793 in the last 24 hours, according to RT.com.

The death toll has increased to 4,825 with today's numbers,authorities said.

Saturday’s staggering increase of nearly 20 percent is by far the largest daily rise since the outbreak began a month ago.

The total number of patients in Italy has increased from 47021 to 53578 by nearly 6500 new cases.

The hard-hit region of Lombardy remains in a critical situation, with 3,095 deaths and 25,515 cases. 

6,072 patients have been recovered according to reports. 

However, authorities said that 2,857 patients are still in ICU's wirh critical conditions.

The situation in the Lombardy region has become so severe that the Italian military had to move dozens of coffins from the cemetery in the town of Bergamo to other areas because local funeral providers were overwhelmed.
