National Police Commission have decided to remove the post of Police Spokesperson of the Sri Lanka Police,according to its sources.
Accordingly, there is no post of Police Spokesperson from today, and SSP Ruwan Gunasekara has been assigned to the Police Legal Division.
The Police Commission has taken this decision following a notification stating that there is a plan to obtain the details of the police through the Defense Ministry.
SSP Ruwan Gunasekara has been appointed as the Director of Police Legal Division.
The Police Public Relations Division of the Sri Lanka Police was established in the 1970s.
In the 1990s, the post of Police Spokesperson was established and functioned under the Police Public Relations Division.
In 2015, the then Inspector General of Police took steps to designate the police media division as a separate division.
The present Police Spokesperson Ruwan Gunasekera was first appointed to the post in November 2014 after the then Senior Superintendent of Police, Ajith Rohana, who was the Police Media Spokesperson at the time, had gone abroad.
In March 2015, he was appointed as the permanent police Spokesperson.
Since then DIG Priyantha Jayakody has held the post of Police Spokesperson for a short period.
Police Officers are forbidden to comment to the media.Official comments to the media can only be made by the police Spokesperson.
With the abolition of the Police Media Division and the abolition of the post of Police Spokesperson, journalists have lost access to police information.
