President takes power over all TV channels

Lawyers point out that the President has the power to regulate state and private television channels, according to a special gazette issued by the President yesterday (09).

The reason is that the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation Act is also taken over by the Defense Ministry which is under the purview of president Maithreepala Sirisena.

Lawyers say that the president, who is the current defense minister, has authority to issue licenses to television channels when this act is implemented through the defense ministry.

The lawyers point out that this could have a negative impact on the media as the President is also tasked with the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) in violation of license conditions.
